I am back with another book review, this week I am reviewing Emotions by Arnulfo Cantarero! Thanks so much to the author for sending me his book for review, all opinions are my own.
I think the main problem with this book was the voice of the narrator. He's an extraterrestrial on earth and I just felt like his voice was too extreme. Like he knew nothing of social norms or anything. I almost felt like like it was the authors own voice, an adult trying to write as a teen. It just didn't work.
The other issue I had with this book was that the storyline. I had no idea what was happening. There was a like Mexican mafia type thing and a kidnapping and then a typical day within the same chapter. I was just very confused as to what the point was. I also found that locations got jumbled. At one point, the family is the States, and another they are in a different country (I still am unsure, somewhere they speak Spanish?)
Re-reading the synopsis after reading the book, seeing that the purpose of Jason's mission was to establish emotions, I get that now. I can see where the author was trying to get that across. However, I feel like that message was lost amongst the adventures and timeline jumps from chapter to chapter.
At this current stage, I didn't love this book. I do think, though, with some tweaking, it could be better. There are some formatting issues, technicality wise, chapters don't start on a new page, the book is cut into unwieldy 4-5 sentence paragraphs, not big chunks... that sort of thing.
Was it awful? No, absolutely not. I've read some terrible books, and I couldn't get through those. The idea, the concept was there, it just needs some work on the execution.
